Cyberattacks Affecting Aviation Industry

Recently, there have been more cyberattacks becoming a major security threat to the aviation industry. As the sector demands more digital systems to help with flight management, increasing replacement and baggage tracking, vulnerabilities grow, making it easier for hackers, state-sponsored actors to compromise safety, data, and operations. In a report that was produced by IOActive in 2023 about cybersecurity threats in airports, it checked critical systems in airports like check-in kiosks, baggage handling, and air traffic control systems, these are particularly vulnerable to cyberattacks due to outdated software and insufficient monitoring(IOActive, 2023) However, that only aids in identifying the danger since cyberattacks are changing, which now creates difficulties. The Issues were addressed and, in place, incorporated mixing physical screening with advanced cybersecurity measures. According to IOActive, the aviation industry's dependence on third-party vendors and old systems leads to security vulnerabilities. The TSA should make investments in cutting-edge cyber security training, carry out routine inspections, and work more closely with business sector partners to exchange threat intelligence to assist in bolstering security.

  1. Cyber awareness is a must in aviation security. My company recently had a bunch of emails hacked, and to my knowledge, we still don't know what information got out. As a company that's heavily involved in the maintenance side of aviation, vulnerabilities can cost a lot of money. On one side, many scams exist when buying aircraft parts that you have to monitor. if we haven't bought parts from a company, we must dig into the company to ensure it's not a front. I have heard horror stories of companies buying thousands of dollars worth of parts and the company just disappearing. Aviation is heavily involved with networking. Cyber awareness is a must because it can affect just about any part of aviation, just parts.
