Weather Hazards

Winter Storm

By: Marco Bowman

Today, we will be covering winter storms and how it impacts aviation. An example of how weather hazards impact aviation is during the winter season in 2024 when a winter storm was traveling through the United States. This storm would cause major hubs to have disruptions. The storm brought hazards of heavy snow, rain, and dangerous winds. These hazards caused by the storm made over 2,000 flights. The cancellations and delays from this storm caused a lot of struggles for the airport because the airport wasn’t meeting its demand, and passengers had longer wait times at airports.

I chose this blog because I feel like it shows how unpredictable and impactful these storms can be, which disrupts aviation operations. I feel like it’s much more difficult to manage winter storms than thunderstorms, with winter storms, there come with icy runways. Logistical challenges are also shown, like some flights being overbooked as well as rerouting flights. Lastly, not all airports are equipped to deal with these storms. Chicago O’Hare Airport has the infrastructure to deal with these storms, but most airports don’t have the resources for it. Many struggles come with winter storms so we should have the proper procedures to ensure safety.
